Highlighted by a dinner cruise on Lake Mendota, the 2006 meeting was very well attended and numerous issues confronting independent haulers in today's waste and recycling industry were discussed. The meeting's host, owner/president Tom Pellitteri of Pellitteri Waste Systems (Madison, Wis.,) asked Marathon to present to the IHA audience. "For more than 20 years our association with Marathon has always been based on the professionalism and service exhibited company-wide. We couldn't ask for more," commented Pellitteri. Marathon Regional Sales Manager, Darrell Ruh and District Sales Manager, Gary Brooks, attended on Marathon's behalf and presented material on Marathon's RAMJET and NEXGEN lines of equipment. Pellitteri Waste Systems utilized their yard to demonstrate equipment such as hook hoists, onboard shredding services, and compaction equipment and to introduce attendees to computerized route tracking programs. The attendees also visited the sites of Pellitteri Waste accounts in the Madison area and observed some of Marathon's RAMJET products including 30-yard self-contained compactors, cart tippers, and five-yard pre-crushers equipped with cart dumpers. Building the Legacy - Marathon Turns 40! 2007 marks the 40th year of manufacturing equipment for the waste handling, recycling and scrap processing industries for Marathon Equipment Company. In the four decades since its inception, Marathon's manufacturing facility has grown from an abandoned service station in Birmingham, Ala. to four plants in Vernon, Ala., Fayette, Ala., Yerington, Nev., and Clearfield, Pa., with a combined floor space of 421,000 sq. ft.... SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICETighten Up for Dense, Uniform Bales The shear blade on a Galaxy2R two-ram baler shears or cuts the material fed into the machine for baling. Shearing the material encourages a uniform bale, increases densification and allows for higher throughput. NEXGEN two-ram balers feature a user-friendly shear adjustment and maintenance system. Each ram blade has four sides that can be flipped to use the sharpest edge available for shearing. Because of the hardness of the blade material Marathon recommends employing a machine shop to sharpen the blades once all four edges have been used. Remove the smallest amount of blade surface as is necessary. Once the blade edges have been removed and/or sharpened, they must be shimmed. (For shim kits, call 1(800) 633-8974.). Staying within tolerance is also crucial for an efficient shear system. NEXGEN specifies a .015” gap between the body and shear blades. If the gap exceeds this distance, the material will likely be torn rather than cut. If the gap is less than .015”, jamming can occur. The ram blades are adjustable from the baler’s exterior. On the wide-body models, seven bolts are used for adjusting the shear beam. On the narrow-body models, four bolts are used. To lower or raise the shear beam, first loosen the jam nuts on the adjustment bolts and then loosen the bolts themselves. Next, loosen the bolts holding the shear beam in place. With the ram blades under the body blades, slide the adjustment bolts down until you have a .015” clearance. Once the specified clearance is achieved, tighten adjustment bolts and the jam nuts. Complete the process by tightening the holding bolts. For further details or illustrations of this process, email fieldservice@marathonequipment.com ON THE WEB
