GreenBuilt self contained compactor with solar powered power unit

Hamilton, Ala. Wal-Mart installs GreenBuilt™ self-contained compactor

In mid-July, a newly relocated and much larger Hamilton, Ala. Wal-Mart Supercenter held its grand opening. The Hamilton store was built using some of the innovative, energy-saving technologies that Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has introduced to many of its store locations across the country. In its quest to save energy, lower utility costs, reduce emissions and produce less waste, Wal-Mart has incorporated products such as motion sensor-driven light-emitting diode (LED) lighting in its refrigerated cases and CFL bulbs in its displays. The Hamilton Supercenter is the first location thus far to install a GreenBuilt™ solar-powered RJ-100SC Self-contained compactor for its waste handling needs.

The environmentally friendly GreenBuilt™ options include a solar-powered power unit, energy efficient variable displacement pumping system, biodegradable hydraulic fluid and cushioned ground rollers. GreenBuilt™ self-contained compactors offer an energy-efficient alternative for properties seeking to lessen their energy usage while maintaining equipment performance. Also offered under the GreenBuilt™ banner is the Vert-I-Pack vertical compactor, which also utilizes a solar-powered power unit and biodegradable hydraulic fluid.

BlokPak® Transfer System Takes Advantage of Pre-Compaction

BlokPak Transfer System

The BlokPak® 3000 Transfer System is another innovative product from Marathon. This high volume transfer compactor offers maximum payloads, high throughput, and quick turnarounds between loads. The system compacts refuse against a vertical steel gate, forming densely packed 8-10 foot logs of waste in the large compaction chamber. When the log is formed, the gate retracts, and the logs are ejected into a transfer trailer at a rate of up to 90 tons per hour.

On the final stroke, the ram extends five feet into the transfer trailer which clears debris from the end of the trailer. This means very little or even no spillage occurs when the trailer is removed. After the log is ejected into the transfer trailer, the vertical gate is closed. This allows waste to continue to be processed while the trailer is being replaced. This highly efficient process saves valuable time that is critical during peak periods of waste being delivered by route vehicles.

"We have been able to pack-out a trailer in less than 13 minutes," says Jim Fender, Director of Solid Waste Management for the City of Salem, VA. "I have been very pleased with the throughput of this machine. We maximize each payload with the weighing system and full penetration."

Since compaction takes place in the compaction chamber and not in the trailer, lighter, less expensive trailers can be utilized. With the pre-compaction system, walking floor style trailers are not subjected to the abuse and damage caused by over-the-top tamping operations.

While the BlokPak® is a large machine, it can be situated to accommodate many types of existing facilities as well as new operations. It fits nicely into existing over-the-top transfer facilities. It can be fitted with a NEXGEN® EZ-TRAX™ Conveyor System or situated for a tipping floor application. Other optional equipment can add more efficiency to the system such as extending hydraulic scissor connector, hydraulic grab claws and load cell weighing system.

New Equipment Manuals

Equipment Operational Manuals Get a Boost

As Marathon compactors, balers, and other equipment become more innovative to accommodate the increasing demands of the waste-handling and recycling industry, so must our manuals. It is our goal to provide the clearest, most concise and comprehensive methodologies for installing, operating, and maintaining your piece of equipment. A great manual, like a great machine, benefits both the end-user in the field as well as the manufacturer by reducing service calls. It combines the knowledge and expertise of our product managers, engineers, and service technicians all in one easy-to-understand document.

Currently, and in the near future, you will notice that our equipment manuals are undergoing revisions. They will be presented in a more streamlined format, provide more in-depth explanations and visual aids for procedures, contain a thorough troubleshooting section, and even have an index for quick reference. To meet the demands of our international markets, Marathon also provides translations for our manuals in various languages. Marathon is dedicated to ensuring our manuals strengthen the legacy of innovation, performance, service, and quality that we have provided to our customers for over 40 years.

Protect Your Power Pack

The use of a weather cover on a compactor or baler power pack will provide several benefits such as preventing contaminates in the hydraulic fluid through the breather cap, suction flange and clean-out covers. It also keeps snow and ice off of the reservoir and shades it during the summer months, reducing heat build-up in the hydraulic system.
