Spotlight on Service
Winter Weather Protection
It’s winter again and time to pay special attention to the hydraulic systems of your baler or compactor. Cold weather affects both the efficiency and the lifespan of hydraulic equipment. Hydraulic oil thickens so that it is hard to draw from the reservoir, which adds extra stress to the pump(s). Seals lose elasticity and become rigid in extreme environments which may lead to leaks and cause excessive wear to cylinders.
So, what can you do to ensure that your equipment is best-suited for winter conditions?
Marathon offers a thermostatically controlled Oil Heater that can be installed for better cold weather performance. It is installed on the oil reservoir and equipped with a manually adjustable thermostat control so that the heater functions only when necessary. The best part is that it does not have to be disconnected during the summer months. Its temperature range cannot exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Warmer oil means warmer components, which means less potential for cold-weather problems. This is especially beneficial for equipment that is operated intermittently,
such as apartment compactors, where the machine is cycled a few times and then shut down for a period.
Also, since hydraulic oil should be replaced annually along with filter cleaning/replacement, it would be good practice to coordinate this with winter preparation of your equipment. Although a clean hydraulic system runs better no matter what time of year it is, this helps eliminate particulate matter as a cause for cold weather breakdown.
