Innovation Opens Way for Markets Overseas

Marathon introduced self–contained compactors into the region three years ago at a five star hotel. The excellent liquid retention of the self–contained compactor made it ideal for this application. As a result of this, Marathon recently installed self–contains at the new Dubai Airport in the United Arab Emirates. Marathon’s self–contains have also been well accepted in Mexico and throughout Central American and the Caribbean. Orders have been received in Turkey with others pending. Opportunities are beginning to emerge in Africa too. Marathon installed two, Two–Ram Balers in Asia for baling municipal solid waste.
Selling Marathon products abroad afford many challenges. With these challenges, Marathon has resorted to creative marketing strategies. One such strategy is to approach local markets in order to meet their unique waste handling needs.
Customizing the standard product line is a concept that does not interrupt or hinder Marathon’s manufacturing process. In some cases, Marathon’s engineers are asked to be innovative with these customizations. In one application, when extremely wet municipal waste was collected, it was mostly contained in plastic bags. Marathon developed mechanisms to puncher the bags to relieve the fluid and allow it to be drained before transport to the landfill.
Another way Marathon is able to be competitive in international markets is by shipping components for final assembly by local service providers.
Marathon has begun the manufacture of a 20,000 lb. capacity hook–lift hoist. Hook hoists are widely used around the globe in most regions other than North America. Marathon’s MEH20 Hook–Lift Hoist can be used in many different applications using one truck such as waste hauling, agriculture, construction and recycling.
