Marathon Partnering with Africa's 2nd Largest City

Lagos, Nigeria - Since 1950, the population of Lagos, Nigeria has grown from 300,000 to more than 16 million* today. It is slated to be one of the world's 10 largest cities by 2010. Oil rich land around the area has driven people and industry to this city at booming rates, but with very little urban planning, engineering, or thought given to infrastructure.
But times are changing for the better. For the last 3 years Marathon has been working with Caltrane, a group designated by the Lagos government, to implement a waste-management solution for the city. Our engineering team determined the best solution was to use an existing site and to retrofit transfer stations to manage the city's refuse. Initially, Marathon will provide 3 BlokPak 3000® transfer systems with a possibility to provide up to 7 more as the city continues to build more sites and improve its infrastructure. Each transfer system can process up to 90 tons of refuse per hour, compacting it into 10 foot logs that are loaded into transfer trailers.

*This is a low-end census estimate that ranges up to 17 million people.
